A proton therapy centre is more than a treatment facility. It reshapes who can access advanced cancer care in this region, what South African science and industry can do, and the lives of the children and families who need it most. Where the difference is felt
Health equity
Access to a treatment proven to reduce lifelong disability and secondary cancers, in children and adults alike, that is currently available nowhere in sub-Saharan Africa. It ends the situation where only families able to afford treatment abroad can reach it.
Clinical care & access
Around 600 patients a year at full operation, on a public cost-recovery model with referral through provincial health budgets, extending precision cancer care well beyond those who can travel for it.
Regional leadership
Positions Cape Town as a referral centre for Southern Africa, drawing patients, clinical trials and academic partnerships, and anchoring a wider ecosystem of research and innovation.
Human capital & economy
Prevents lifelong disability in children, protects the livelihoods of caregivers, and creates skilled jobs, specialist training and research in accelerator physics and nuclear medicine, capability that stays in the country.
